Windsor ON / Detroit MI – On the heels of an historic win as the first Canadian organization to be named a John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Challenge Winner, Media City Film Festival is honoured to be supported by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. https://www.oscars.org/

Along with a select number of recipients, including The Film Society of Lincoln Center and Toronto International Film Festival, Media City Film Festival has been chosen by the Academy to share $2.5 million in grant funding in 2020-2021.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is a global community of more than 9,000 of the most accomplished artists, filmmakers and executives working in film. In addition to celebrating and recognizing excellence in filmmaking through the Oscars, the Academy supports a wide range of initiatives to promote the art and science of the movies, including public programming, educational outreach and the upcoming Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, which is under construction in Los Angeles.

Media City Film Festival is elated to be recognized by the Academy for our contributions to local and global artists’ film culture. What we’ve built in Windsor-Detroit is unique anywhere in the world and is recognized as such. MCFF will continue to support artists through fellowships and special projects, building networks of solidarity until a time when we can join each other again in the cinema. Recognition from the Academy is something Windsor and Detroit can be very proud of as we plan for the festival’s 25th anniversary celebrations,” said MCFF Program Director Oona Mosna

“The Academy’s first priority remains to help those in our film community most impacted by the current global crisis. Our contribution of $2 million in emergency funds to the Academy Foundation, along with the grants we bestow on an annual basis, will surely benefit struggling organizations so they may continue to encourage diverse storytelling and enrich cinema and its artists,” said Academy governor and Education and Outreach Committee chair Nancy Utley.

The Academy Grants program provides financial support to qualifying film festivals, educational institutions and film scholars and has awarded more than $15 million since 1968.
